Bringing a kitten home is exciting, and a little preparation makes the first weeks much easier. Here is a practical checklist of everything a new kitten needs, with items you can order from our shop.

1. Kitten food

Kittens grow fast and need more protein and energy than adult cats. Choose food made for their age:

• Weaning to 4 months: Royal Canin Mother & Babycat, with very small kibbles that can be softened with warm water.
• 4 to 12 months: Royal Canin Kitten.
• Wet food: Pro Plan Healthy Start Kitten or Whiskas Junior for hydration and variety.

2. Litter box and litter

Pick a box with low sides such as the litter tray with rim and scoop, and a soft, low-dust clumping litter. See our cat litter guide and the cat litter range.

3. Bowls and water

Use shallow, easy-to-clean bowls such as a stainless steel dual bowl, and change the water daily.

4. A carrier

You will need a carrier for the trip home and vet visits, for example the Hello Cats carrier backpack. More in cat accessories.

5. Toys and play

Play builds confidence and burns energy. Start with an interactive ball tower and a few light toys from cat toys.

6. Grooming

Brush gently a few times a week so your kitten gets used to handling, for example with the Pet King grooming brush. See grooming & healthcare.

7. Treats for bonding

The first week

• Keep your kitten in one quiet room at first, with food, water and the litter box apart from each other.
• Keep the food the breeder or shelter used for a few days, then switch gradually with our 7-day plan.
• Book a vet check for vaccinations and deworming.
